WHAT IS THE SCORPION?

All scorpions are able to attack and inflict wounds on people, but there are numerous species in the southwest part of the United States that are extremely dangerous for people. Most other species except for the fatally poisonous centruroides species can sting you but their sting is as serious as a beesting.

They can be found in the garden, under rocks, boards or other debris that is somehow protected from weather. They may even be found in the home and are often in attics, livingrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. They will migrate when temperatures reeach above 100 F to an area that is cooler. They also tend to hide in places that are protected from the sun and predators during the day.

They only sting when they are touched or provoked. If you are alergic to bee stings then chances are that scorpions will effect you in a similar or worst way. Avoid scoprpions if you see them. To eliminate their hiding places, remove any loose boards, debris, rocks or clutter in and around the home. Make sure you are wearing protective gloves and clothing while doing this cleanup. In locations where scorpions may be hiding in the lawn otr garden, spray with diazinon, and in the home you may spray with an insecticide containing chlorypyrifos. Scorprions often enter the home through loose screens or door frames or weather stripping that has decayed. Make sure to keep these areas maintained to keep the scorpions out. If you are stung or bitten by a scorpion, apply ice and contact your physician.
